Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) combats gender inequality and extreme poverty in Nairobi’s two largest slums—Kibera and Mathere-- by linking tuition free schools for girls to holistic social services for all. The SHOFCO model is centered around a school that provides a superior education with free healthcare, food, and psychosocial services. The school gives students the support they need to complete their education and the tools to find a path out of poverty for themselves and their families. SHOFCO then extends holistic community services beyond the families of students to the entire community. These services include things like clean water, quality health care, and economic empowerment opportunities.
In July 2016, Madonna traveled to Nairobi where she saw SHOFCO’s work in action in the slums of Kibera. She began a partnership with SHOFCO to support 800 girls and women, with a focus on curbing gender-based violence in Kibera. The programming includes psycho-social and legal support, economic empowerment programming, sexual reproductive health education and the provision of a gender safe house for children and women who have been victims of gender-based violence.
